Bihar Board Class 9 English Prose Chapter 5 Solutions – Echo and Narcissus
The present myth from Greek mythology intorduces two people, Echo and Narcissus.
Their names have a meaning in the myth that has carried over to our present day
langauge. The given piece has been rendered in English by MOIRA KERR AND
JOHN BENETT.
ग्रीक पौराणिक कथाओं से वर्तमान मिथक में दो लोगों, इको और नार्सिसस का परिचय दिया गया है। उनके नामों का मिथक में एक अर्थ है जो हमारी वर्तमान भाषा में भी मौजूद है। दिए गए अंश को अंग्रेजी में मोइरा केर और जॉन बेनेट द्वारा प्रस्तुत किया गया है।
ECHO AND NARCISSUS
1. Not many men, or even gods,were as handsome as young Narcissus. So fair was he
that almost everyone who sawhim fell in love with him that moment.
1. बहुत कम लोग, यहाँ तक कि देवता भी, युवा नार्सिसस की तरह सुंदर थे। वह इतना सुंदर था कि उसे देखने वाला लगभग हर व्यक्ति उसी क्षण उससे प्यार करने लगा।
2. One day, as Narcissus roamed the forests with his hunting companions, he was
spied by the watchful nymph Echo. She had once been a great chatterer, ready to talk
to any passer-by on any subject at any time, and on several occasions she had detained
goddess Hera with hours of casual talks, just as Hera was on the point of stumbling
upon Zeus with one of his illicit loves. Eventually Hera grew so annoyed that she put a
curse on Echo, and from that time on the unfortunate nymph could say nothing but the
last few words that she heard.
2. एक दिन, जब नार्सिसस अपने शिकार साथियों के साथ जंगलों में घूम रहा था, तो उसे सतर्क अप्सरा इको ने देखा। वह एक समय में बहुत बातूनी थी, किसी भी राहगीर से किसी भी विषय पर बात करने के लिए तैयार रहती थी, और कई मौकों पर उसने देवी हेरा को घंटों तक अनौपचारिक बातचीत में उलझाए रखा था, ठीक उसी समय जब हेरा ज़्यूस के किसी अवैध प्रेम से टकराने वाली थी। आखिरकार हेरा इतनी नाराज़ हो गई कि उसने इको को श्राप दे दिया, और उस समय से वह बदकिस्मत अप्सरा सिर्फ़ आखिरी कुछ शब्द ही बोल पाई जो उसने सुने थे।
3. Trembling, Echo followed Narcissus through the trees. She longed to go closer to
him to gaze upon the beauty of his face, but she feared that he would laugh at her silly
speech. Before long, Narcissus wandered away from his companions, and when he
realised he was lost, he called in panic. "Is there anybody here?"
3. कांपते हुए इको पेड़ों के बीच से नार्सिसस के पीछे-पीछे चली गई। वह उसके चेहरे की खूबसूरती को निहारने के लिए उसके करीब जाना चाहती थी, लेकिन उसे डर था कि वह उसकी मूर्खतापूर्ण बातों पर हंसेगा। कुछ ही देर में नार्सिसस अपने साथियों से दूर चला गया और जब उसे एहसास हुआ कि वह खो गया है, तो उसने घबराकर पुकारा। "क्या यहाँ कोई है?"
4. "Here!" called Echo.

5. Mystified by this reply, Narcissus shouted. "Come!"

6. "Come!" shouted Echo.

7. Narcissus was convinced that somcone was playing trick on him.

8. "Why are you avoiding me?"he called. The only answer he heard was his own
question repeated from the woods.

9. "Come here, and let us meet!" pleaded Narcissus.

10. "Let us meet!" Echo answered, delighted.

11. She overcame her shyness, and crept from her biding place to approach Narcissus.
Buthe, satisfied now that he had solved the mystery of the voice,roughly pushed her
away and ran.
11. उसने अपनी शर्म पर काबू पाया और अपने बैठने की जगह से रेंगकर नार्सिसस के पास पहुंची। लेकिन अब जब उसे लगा कि उसने आवाज़ का रहस्य सुलझा लिया है, तो उसने उसे धक्का देकर दूर कर दिया और भाग गया।
12. "I would die before I would have you near me!" he
shouted mockingly over his shoulder.
12. "मैं तुम्हें अपने पास पाने से पहले ही मर जाऊंगा!" उसने अपने कंधे के ऊपर से उपहासपूर्वक चिल्लाया।
13. Helpless, Echo had to call afterhim, "I would have you

near me!
The nymph was so embarrassed and ashamed that she
hid herself in a dark cave, and never came into the air and
sunlight again. Her youth and beauty withered away, and
herbody became so shrunken and tiny that eventually she
vanished altogether. All that was left was the pathetic voice
that still roams the world, anxious to talk, yet able only to
repeat what others say.
13. असहाय होकर इको को उसे पुकारना पड़ा, "मैं तुम्हें अपने पास चाहती हूँ 14! अप्सरा इतनी शर्मिंदा और लज्जित थी कि उसने खुद को एक अंधेरी गुफा में छिपा लिया, और फिर कभी हवा और सूरज की रोशनी में नहीं आई। उसकी जवानी और सुंदरता खत्म हो गई, और उसका शरीर इतना सिकुड़ गया और छोटा हो गया कि अंततः वह पूरी तरह से गायब हो गई। जो कुछ बचा था वह दयनीय आवाज थी जो अभी भी दुनिया भर में घूमती है, बात करने के लिए उत्सुक है, फिर भी केवल वही दोहरा सकती है जो दूसरे कहते हैं।
15. Poor Echo was not the only one to be treated brutally by Narcissus. He had
played with many hearts, and at last one of those he had scomed prayed to the gods
that Narcissus would some day find himselfscorned by one he loved.The prayer was
heard, and granted.

16. Tired and thirsty from his hunting, Narcissus threw himself down beside a stili,
clear pool to drink. As he leaned overthe shining surtace, he saw the reflection of the
most beautiful face hehad ever seen. His heart trembled at the sight, and he could not
tear himself away from it-his own image.
16. शिकार से थककर और प्यासा, नार्सिसस पानी पीने के लिए एक शांत, साफ तालाब के पास लेट गया। जब वह चमकती हुई सतह पर झुका, तो उसने सबसे खूबसूरत चेहरे का प्रतिबिंब देखा जो उसने कभी देखा था। यह दृश्य देखकर उसका दिल कांप उठा, और वह खुद को उससे अलग नहीं कर सका- अपनी ही छवि से।
17. Fora long time Narcissus remained there beside the pool, never raising his eyes
from the surface, and from time to time murmuring words of love. Ai last his body
withered away and became the stem of a flower, and his head the lovely gold and
white blossom which stilllooks into quiet pools, and is called Narcissus.
17. बहुत समय तक नार्सिसस तालाब के किनारे ही रहा, कभी भी अपनी आँखें पानी की सतह से ऊपर नहीं उठाता था, और कभी-कभी प्यार भरे शब्द बुदबुदाता रहता था। अंत में उसका शरीर सूखकर फूल का तना बन गया, और उसका सिर सुंदर सुनहरे और सफेद फूल जैसा हो गया जो अभी भी शांत तालाबों में दिखता है, और नार्सिसस कहलाता है।
